UW Stout Instructional Design

The instructional design team at UW Stout is responsible for helping distance and on-campus instructors create and maintain high quality, accessible, and effective online courses and learning tools.

Project Description

The ID team at Stout includes a regular work force of around 5 to 8 student assistants. Due to the temporary nature of their positions, as they are students, we have a regular turnover of these employees. To perform the necessary tasks for the position they need to be familiar with a variety of industry specific tools, as well as our research and design standards. This is usually taught individually over the course of their time with the department on an ‘as needed’ basis. This regularly leads to lost time as a supervisor needs to teach the needed information individually, as necessary. Having a developed onboarding course would allow the new assistants to learn the necessary skills and information within the first couple of weeks instead of over several months. It would also ensure a standardized learning experience, instead of piece-meal instruction from multiple supervisors.

Aim

We intend to create a set of standard instructional materials for the purpose of onboarding student employees. Introducing them to the tools set we use, as well as building their understanding of our research methods, and design standards.
